That Colts player is from a team I traded for in 1978. Not sure exactly how old they are, however. Got my first board for Christmas that year along with the AFC Central and NFC West teams. My buddy desperately wanted the Houston Oilers. So, he offered to trade his Colts, Giants, Eagles and Redskins for my Oilers. Needless to say, I took that deal! Never understood why he didn't just order the Oilers from Tudor. 🤨 So instead of starting my league with 8 teams, I started with 12.

Yes! I too use the Pro Football Reference! However, my main source is a pro football guide that I bought umpteen years ago, probably in 1978. I don't know the title of it, because the cover came off. It has a brief narrative for each team about their 1978 season, a one or two sentence description of each game that season, full roster, draft picks, and schedule for the upcoming season. It's a great old school reference guide.

Hi all, I use player rosters from the 1978 era give or take a couple years either way. There are a few exceptions of course. For instance, I have Lawrence Taylor (1981) playing with the Giants, and Mike Rozier (1985) playing for the Oilers. I use that era because 1978 was the first year I started my electric football league. For the most part, I try to keep the players with the teams that they played for in the real world. Again, there are notable exceptions. For instance, there was a blockbuster trade a couple seasons ago between the Giants and the Oilers that brought Earl Campbell to the Giants. And Doug Williams was drafted by the LA Rams in Season 9 since I didn't have the Tampa Bay Bucs at that time. Also, John Jefferson was drafted by the Baltimore Colts many seasons ago. So, what rules or guidelines if any do you use to determine player rosters?

Doesn't sound crazy at all. It's what works for you. That's the beauty of being the commissioner of your own league. 😁

I would like to trim the games down to one hour but I don't want to lower the number of plays and I like having some record of each game, so I guess it will remain 2 hours. I also at times play the first half one day, and the second half the next day.

Rick, Love the stat sheets. Very impressive. Even with just my rudimentary stats it takes 2 hours to complete a game which is why I don't go to a more sophisticated stat system because my guess is it would take considerably longer. How long does it take you to complete a game?

Hi Andre, I'm hopelessly old school. I have a notebook that I jot down each play of every game and keep the play count as I have 8 plays per quarter. At the end of the season, I have in my head the player(s) from each team that should be considered as MVP. I then give them points, positive or negative based on the plays recorded in the notebook. Not a polished system, but I'm not interested in getting too crazy with stats.

Interestingly my next game is the Rams at the 49ers.

The defending Superbowl Champion Denver Broncos hosted the Oakland Raiders, (the number one seed in the NFC) in the opening game of the new season. The Bronco defense was dominant as they shut down the Raiders on their opening drive. Bronco running back Jim Jensen fumbled on the third play of the Broncos opening drive which was recovered by the Raiders and taken all the way to the Bronco 22 yard line. Again, the Bronco defense not only held but sent the Raiders back 15 yards. Kicker Errol Mann was able to knock home a 52 yard field goal for the first score of the game. Bronco QB Craig Morton was a perfect 4 of 4 for 66 yards as he led his team deep into Raider territory. K Jim Turner tied the game as time ran expired in the first half. The Broncos went on a 7 play drive that included a forth down conversion and culminated with a Morton to WR Rick Upchurch 42 TD. The Bronco defense held tough and the Raiders were not able to score again. The Broncos win 10-3.

Thanks Curt. Appreciate your input. I like your league structure. Mine is similar but each team in my league only plays three games each season. Didn't start painting yet, and I'm ready to start the season. So I've decided to only add Tampa and Miami for this season, #16. That will make for a total of 20 teams. I'm keeping the 6 division set-up. Two of the six divisions (one in each conference) will now have 4 teams, the rest will still have three teams. My playoff scheme is the 6 division winners and 4 wildcards making the playoffs. Division winners get a first round bye and the winners of the 2 wildcard games playing the number one seed in the divisional round. The #2 and #3 seeds play each other in the divisional round.

AFC Championship - Cleveland Browns at Baltimore Colts The Browns get the ball first. On the second play from scrimmage, QB Brian Sipe throws a short floater that is intercepted by DB Doug Nettles. After one first down the Colt drive sputters. K Tony Linhart hits a knuckle ball threw the uprights for the first score of the game. Browns RB Charles White fumbles the ensuing kickoff and the ball rolls out of bounds at the 2 yard line. On the very next play RB Mike Pruitt is tackled in the endzone for a safety giving the Colts a 5-0 lead. Colts FB Rob Carpenter returns the short kickoff 51 yards setting up the Colt offense. From there, Carpenter has a 31 yard run followed by an 8 yard run for a TD. The Browns are able to get their first 1st down of the game on the next drive, but a 4th down gamble ends the drive as LB Tom McLeod sacks Sipe. QB Bert Jones has two scrambles for 16 yards setting up Linhart's second field goal (34 yards) as time runs out in the first half. Colts 15, Browns 0. The Colt's first drive of the second half starts with an 11 yard run by Carpenter and ends with a Jones to WR John Jefferson 37 yard pass for a TD. The Brown's first drive of the second half ends quickly as Sipe throws his second interception of the afternoon. The Jones to Jefferson combination works again, this time for 37 yards and another TD. The Memorial Stadium crowd begins to celebrate as the Colts now have a seemingly insurmountable lead at 29-0. Sipe goes right back to throwing as he airs out a bomb that is caught by WR Dave Logan who takes it all the way for a TD. The Browns special teams recovers the onside kick and threaten to make things at least a little interesting. But four straight incompletions is the final nail in the coffin. The Colts run out the clock and celebrate as they have earned their 6th trip to the Superbowl! Colts 29 Browns 7 New Orleans Saints at the Denver Broncos The Saints first drive gets off to a rocky start as Denver LB Randy Gradishar sacks QB Bobby Scott for an 16 yard loss. RB Chuck Mucie is then stuffed for a 2 yard loss. On 3rd and 28, Scott finds TE Henry Childs over the middle for a 31 yard gain and a first down. On the very next play, Scott throws a bomb that is caught by WR Wes Chandler resulting in a 69 yard TD. K Steve Mayer shanks the extra point attempt and the Saints remain up 6-0. The Broncos go on an 11 play drive that includes 9 rushes and eats up almost the rest of the first half. The final two plays of the drive were a 25 yard pass from QB Craig Morton to RB Jim Jensen of 25 yards on 4th down and a 23 yard run by RB Otis Armstrong for the tying TD. K Jim Turner breaks the tie with a successful extra point. With time running out the Saints next drive ends as quickly as it starts as the Bronco defense chalks up it's second sack of Scott. The Broncos lead 7-6 at halftime. The Broncos get the ball to start the second half. The seven play drive ends with an incomplete pass on 4th and 1. With the third quarter nearly over, the Saints begin their first drive of the second half. The forth play of the drive is a big one as Chuck Muncie reverses field and rumbles for 48 yards and the go ahead TD. Mucie then punches threw for the 2 point conversion giving the Saints a 14-7 lead. With only 5 plays left in the game, the Bronco offense begins the defining drive of the game. First is a Morton scramble for 20 yards. Next, Morton completes a pass to WR Steve Watson for 17 yards, followed by another scramble by Morton for 16 yards. Morton masterfully evades a tough Saints rush and completes to Armstrong for 23 more yards to the 15 yard line of New Orleans. On the last play of regulation, Morton finds Jensen in the back of the endzone for the game tying TD on the final play of the game. Turner knocks home the extra point sending the game into overtime. **Overtime is 8 plays long. Which ever team is leading after the period wins the game. If the teams are tied at the end of overtime of a regular season game, the game ends in a tie. If the teams are tied at the end of overtime of a playoff game, a second 8 period overtime game begins. The game goes on until one team is leading at the end of the overtime period** The Saints win the toss and elect to receive. The Saints 7 play drive ends with a sack of Bobby Scott. Armstrong gets a spectacular 59 yard punt return but is just short of field goal range. On the final play of overtime, Morton throws an incomplete pass. The Broncos win the toss and elect to receive to start the second overtime period. Armstrong has another exceptional return this time of 41 yards. Morton completes back to back passes to Jensen of 14 yards and 13 yards. He follows up with a 13 yard scramble and a completion to Armstrong of 15 yards to the Saints 5 yard line. From there, Jensen rumbles in for the go ahead TD. The Broncos go for a two point conversion leaving only two plays left in the period. The Saints get the ball back. Scott throws up two Hail-Marys both falling incomplete. The Broncos win in double OT 20-14. In only there second year in the league, the Broncos punch there ticket to the Superbowl! All four games in the Divisional Round of the Season 15 playoffs were very competitive. Houston Oilers 1-1-1 NFC South Champions at Denver Broncos 2-1 NFC Central Champions The Bronco defense comes up big in the first half sacking Oiler QB Kenny Stabler 3 times and forcing an interception. Bronco RB Otis Anderson rumbles 57 yards giving the Broncos a 7-0 lead. A fumble cost the Broncos a chance to go up by two scores. 7-0 Broncos at halftime. After a QB Craig Morton interception, the Oilers tie the game as FB Tim Wilson runs 43 yards for a TD. Morton however finds his range in the final minutes completing key passes including a 37 yarder to Anderson for the go ahead score. The Broncos fail on the two point conversion as time runs out. Broncos 13 Oilers 7 Cleveland Browns 3-0 AFC Midlands Champions at New England Patriots 3-0 AFC North Champions The Browns defense played well holding the Pats to a pair of long field goals in the first half. On the offensive side of the ball, Browns QB Brian Sipe completed 5 of 5 passes in the first half the last a 32 yard strike to WR Dave Logan for a TD. Though Pats RB and return specialist Billy Simms had great kickoff and punt returns in the game, the Browns special teams took advantage of a Simm's 2nd quarter fumble during a kickoff return. Browns WR Reggie Rucker was able to recover the fumble and return it for a TD. The Browns led at halftime 14-6. Pats QB Tony Eason ended the first drive of the second half with a 34 yard touchdown to WR Harold Jackson. The two point conversion failed leaving the Pats trailing 14-12. The Browns next drive ends successfully as RB Charles White sprints 48 yards for a TD. The extra point gave the Browns a two score lead. The Pats quickly get into field goal range thanks to Eason completions to Simms and WR Stanley Morgan. K David Posey boots his 3rd field goal of the evening this one 37 yards bringing the Pats to within a score. With time running low, the Pats attempt an onside kick. The Browns recover. After a 23 yard run by White, the Brown offense assumes the victory formation ending the game. Browns 21 Patriots 15 Cincinnati Bengals 2-2 (Wildcard Winner) at Baltimore Colts 3-0 AFC Metro Champions Bengal QB Art Schlichter had a rough first half going 0-4 while the Colt defense stuffed the Bengal running game. The Colts opened the scoring with a RB Rob Carpenter 2 yard burst for a TD. The Colts second drive resulted in a K Tony Linhart 39 yard field goal giving the Colts a 10-0 lead at the half. The Colts open the 2nd half successfully moving the ball, however a QB Bert Jones pass is tipped resulting in an interception. With the Bengal running game contained Schlichter goes to the air. After another incomplete pass, Schlichter pulls off an amazing 44 yard scramble for a TD. The Bengals are now within a field goal of tying the game. With time running low, the Colts go on a 6 play drive, with the key play being a 3rd down Bert Jones completion to WR John Jefferson, his 3rd catch of the night. From there the Colts assume the victory formation. Colts 10 Bengals 7 New Orleans Saints 2-1-1 (Wildcard Winners) at Oakland Raiders 2-1 NFC West Coast Champions I was really looking forward to this game as this is the third straight year that the Saints and Raiders will have met in the playoffs with the score one game each. The Saints strike immediately as RB Tony Galbreath returns the opening kickoff 106 yards for the TD. The Raiders proceed on an epic 13 play drive (12 runs, 1 pass) ending with a QB Norris Weese 30 yard completion to TE Raymond Chester for a TD. The Raiders go for the 2 point conversion but RB Mark VanEghan is stuffed for no gain. The Saints next drive ends with a failed 4th down scramble attempt by QB Bobby Scott giving the Raiders a chance to take the lead. And they do as K Errol Mann boots a 45 yard field goal as time runs out in the first half. Raiders 9 Saints 7. The Saints defense comes out hot in the third quarter sacking Weese and forcing an interception. The Saints offense cashes in as their 5 play drive ends with Galbreath rumbling 9 yards for the go-ahead TD. The Raiders now need a TD as they trail 14-9. The Raiders grind down the field for 6 plays getting to the Saints 21 yard line. But on 4th a 11, Weese throws his second interception of the evening ending the Raiders hopes of a victory.
