Today was Super Bowl Sunday! The Pittsburgh Steelers played the defending Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos. The Steelers won Super Bowls 13 and 14, so this was truly a battle of champions. This was also the first time these two teams played each other. The game took place in the Orange Bowl showcasing the expansion team Dolphin's stadium. (Super Bowl 17 will take place in Tampa Stadium, home of this season's other expansion team, the Buccaneers). The Broncos win the coin toss and decide to kickoff. Steelers WR Calvin Sweeney returns the kickoff to the Steelers 24 yard line. After a run for a one yard loss by RB Franco Harris, QB Terry Bradshaw is sacked for a 14 yard loss. Bradshaw completes to Sweeney on 3rd down for 15 yards bringing up 4th down. The Steelers seemingly decide to punt. P Craig Colquitt takes the snap and seeing WR Jim Smith wide open throws a pass. The ball falls incomplete and the Broncos start their first drive in excellent field position at the Steelers 24 yard line. RB Rob Lytle takes the handoff, runs between the tackle and center motoring 24 yards into the endzone. Lytle rumbles into the endzone again for the 2 point conversion giving the Broncos an 8-0 lead. Sweeney only manages to get to the 12 yard line on the ensuing kickoff. After a completion of 5 yards and an incomplete pass, Bradshaw manages to find Sweeney along the left sideline for a completion covering 49 yards. The drive comes to an abrupt end as Bradshaw is sacked twice for a total loss of 29 yards. This time on 4th down Colquitt punts the ball away. The Bronco's next drive features QB Craig Morton completions of 8 yards and 10 yards and two scrambles for a total of 22 yards. With only seconds remaining in the first half, K Jim Turner boots a 28 yard field goal giving the Broncos an 11-0 lead at the half. The second half starts with Bronco WR Steve Watson returning the kickoff to the Bronco 31 yard line. Under heavy pressure, Morton airs out a pass intended for Lytle. Steeler S Donnie Shell has perfect coverage, stride for stride with Lytle. Morton's pass is perfect. Lytle pulls it in and manages to out run Shell to the endzone for the TD. The Broncos extend their lead to 17-0. Turner misses the PAT. The Steelers are now down 3 scores. After two incompletions, Bradshaw completes to WR John Stallworth who streaks down the left sideline for a 37 yard gain. After a 9 yard run, Harris takes the next handoff and rumbles 16 yards for the Steelers first score. K Matt Bahr boots the extra point and the Steelers trail 17-7. The game gets a bit more interesting when Watson fumbles the kickoff and the ball goes out of bounds at the Bronco 1 yard line. Facing heavy pressure in his own endzone and surrounded by Steeler rushers, Morton completes to Watson for 9 yards giving the Bronco offense some breathing room. Morton then completes his next 4 passes as time runs out in the 3rd quarter. RB Otis Armstrong runs for 12 yards to start the final period, and then breaks a big run covering 36 yards for a touchdown. Turner knuckleballs the PAT just inside the right upright giving the Broncos a seemingly insurmountable 24-7 lead. Bradshaw completes to TE Benny Cunningham for 18 yards but that would be the last positive event for the Steelers. The Broncos sack Bradshaw 2 of the next 3 plays, the last coming on 4th and 35. The Broncos assume the Victory formation as time runs out. Final: Broncos 24 Steelers 7. The Broncos are once again (or still) Super Bowl Champions! Couldn't decide if RB Rob Lytle (5 carries for 43 yards, one touchdown and also caught a pass for a touchdown) or QB Craig Morton (8 of 8 for 141 yards and 1 TD and masterfully avoiding the Steeler D line) should be the MVP, so they will share the honor as Co-MVPs. The Denver front 7 tallied 6 sacks so they could have also been chosen as the collective MVP.

"I do like that the Vikings are in the AFC in your league." The Vikings were shifted to the AFC this season, number 16, and will be in the AFC for one more season. They were in the NFC from their inception in Season 8 through Season 14. Once the Chargers, Seahawks, Bears and Lions join the league for Season 18, they will shift back into the NFC.

Fortune favors the bold.

The undefeated Vikings host the Steelers at Metropolitan Stadium. The field is like a frozen tundra. (I played this game on my somewhat rusty 660 board to simulate the less than ideal conditions). The Steeler's opening 9 play drive featured a 41 yard completion from QB Terry Bradshaw to RB Franco Harris. The drive is stopped as the Viking defense sacks Bradshaw for a 2 yard loss. K Matt Bahr shanks a 43 yard field goal just inside the right upright giving the Steelers the early lead. Vikings WR Sammy White fumbles the ensuing kickoff. Steelers special teamer and WR Calvin Sweeney recovers the fumble and walks into the endzone for the score. Bahr shanks the PAT just wide of the upright and the Steelers maintain a 9-0 lead. The Viking's next drive features short passes as the Vikings slowly march down the field. The only seconds left, QB Fran Tarkenton is caught running backwards for a 22 yard loss. The 1st half comes to a close with Tarkenton missing on a pass to a wide-open Sammy White. The Steelers lead 9-0 at halftime. The second half starts off with yet another Viking blunder as WR Ahmad Rashad slip slides the kickoff return only to the 7 yard line. Continuing the mistake filled trend, Tarkenton goes back to pass and in order to avoid the rush inadvertently steps on the backline of the endzone resulting in a safety. Sweeney returns the ensuing free kick 34 yards to the 49 yard line giving the Steelers great field position. A tough Viking defense stuffs Franco Harris twice for 1 yard gains and forces an incomplete pass. Coach Chuck Noll decides to go for it on forth and 8. The play results in a Bradshaw to WR Jim Smith completion covering 48 yards to the Viking 1 yard line. Harris plunges over the goal line one play later and the Steelers take a 17-0 lead. Harris then completes the 2 point conversion in almost identical fashion to up the lead to 19-0. The Met goes silent as it becomes apparent that the Steelers, not their beloved Vikings will be going to Superbowl 16. To the Viking's credit, Tarkenton completes to TE Bob Tucker covering 47 yards for a touchdown late in the 4th quarter. The Steelers recover the onsides kick and after a 13 yard gain by Harris, assume the Victory formation. Super Bowl 16 at the Orange Bowl - Pittsburgh Steelers vs Denver Broncos

In the videos, I am amazed at your O lineman that seem to be trap blocking and going exactly where they are supposed to go! You have amazing control of your players! And wow, the speed of your guys! I don't know the nuances of your rules, but I'll offer an opinion with regard to the 2-point conversion. I'm thinking he was stopped. Reason being that even though the back of the base was moving forward, it hadn't reached the front of the yard mark of the bases forward progress so technically it wasn't forward progress at that point. Conversely, I can also imagine that he is executing a spin move at this point in order to get out of the tackle and if that's the case then he wouldn't be tackled. Again, I don't know the nuances of your rules. Thanks for sharing the video, Terry! PS: Almost forgot to mention that I love the uniforms on these teams!

I liked Morton also. I think he was somewhat unfairly remembered only for his poor performance in Super Bowl 12. As for the NFC Championship, it was an edge of your seat type of game! I couldn't believe the pressure the Orange Crush was getting on Bobby Scott! No blitzing, just mainly crowding the A gap. Also, very unusual to overcome two turnovers and win!

Thanks Curt. Plenty of good, viable suggestions for home team advantage. I don't incorporate any at the moment, but next season I will give the home team a one-time 5-yard procedure penalty at the home team's choosing once per game. This is to simulate crowd noise. It can be incorporated only before the play has started so as not to wipeout a tremendous gain of yardage or a score.

The Saints get the ball to start the second half. After scrambling for an 11 yard gain, QB Bobby Scott completes a pass to TE Henry Childs who was all alone on the short end of the field along the sidelines. The big man rumbles down the sideline covering 53 yards to the Bronco 3 yard line. The Bronco defense stuffs the Saints on two straight running plays and Scott is sacked yet again for a 17 yard loss on 3rd down. K Nick Mike-Meyer shanks a FG just inside the left post for the first score of the game. The ensuing kickoff is a good one, driving return man Steve Watson 3 yards deep into the endzone. Watson decides to bring it out sprinting straight up the middle curling left and following a two-man convoy down the left sideline into the endzone for a touchdown. The Superdome goes silent. K Jim Turner adds the extra point giving the Broncos a 7-3 lead. RB Chuck Muncie takes the kickoff all the way to the 40 yard line giving the Saints good field position. After a 13 yard completion to WR Ike Harris, Scott throws an incomplete pass and is sacked twice forcing a punt. Watson fumbles the punt but fortunately for the Broncos the ball goes out of bounds. QB Craig Morton completes to RB Otis Armstrong for 11 yards, and then throws his second interception of the game. LB Reggie Mathis gets his second pick of the game returning the ball to the Bronco 31 yard-line. With only 3 plays remaining in the game, the Saints face a 3rd and 3. Scott is sacked for the 6th time. Now, at 4th and 11, and with only two plays remaining, Scott throws a pass into the endzone intended for Muncie that falls incomplete. The Broncos offense assumes the victory formation ending the game. Thanks to a tough defense that tallied 6 sacks, and despite two Morton interceptions, the Broncos prevail 7-3 and will defend their season 15 Super Bowl title in Super Bowl 16.

Denver Broncos at New Orleans Saints This is the Saints 4th straight trip to the NFC Championship Game and the 8th in their history. Amazingly they lost the previous 7. This is also a rematch of last year's classic double overtime Championship Game that the Broncos eaked out at Mile High Stadium last season. The defending Superbowl Champion Broncos got first possession. Under heavy pressure, QB Craig Morton throws a pass to TE Riley Odoms. The pass bounces off his chest and into the hands of Saints linebacker Reggie Mathis who returns the ball 12 yards setting up the Saint offense. The Saint's offense takes over and finds that it is tough sledding against the well-prepared Bronco defense. A 10 play drive ends with two straight sacks (one by DE Lyle Alzado and the other by LB Tom Jackson) of QB Bobby Scott for a total loss 35 yards. Saints punter Russell Erxleben crushes a 75 yard punt driving return man Steve Watson into the endzone. He only manages to get to the 23 yard line. After 2 straight 11 yard scrambles, Morton overthrows a wide open Steve Watson as the scoreless first half comes to an end.

Alameda County Coliseum. That's where my Raiders play. This year's AFC Championship is going to be played at Metropolitan Stadium (The Met). That was where the Vikings played before the HHH Metrodome was built. Outdoors in Minnesota in December. 🤩 I'm going to play the game on my old 620 board. That board has some very minor rust and dents which along with some shredded Styrofoam will mimic slippery and snowy conditions. Looking forward to that game!

And then there were four. The Divisional Playoff Round is complete. Big plays highlighted all these games. AFC Pittsburgh at Washington - (These two teams met in RFK Stadium on the final week of the regular season. The Redskins beat the Steelers 18-11). The Steelers score on their opening drive. RB Franco Harris follows up a 48 yard run with a 7 yard run for a touchdown. The Redskins answer with an 8 play drive ending with a 55 yard touchdown pass, QB Billy Kilmer to RB Clarence Harmon. After an incomplete pass over the middle, QB Terry Bradshaw throws a 67 yard bomb to WR Calvin Sweeney for a touchdown. Kilmer is sacked to end the first half. Steelers 14 Redskins 7. The Redskins opening drive of the second half covers 10 plays but ends with a sack of Kilmer. The Redskins punt. On 3rd and 6, Bradshaw unloads another bomb this time to WR John Stallworth covering 64 yards. 3 plays later, K Matt Bahr boots a 30 yard FG giving the Steelers a 10 point lead. Kilmer is intercepted by Steeler Safety Donnie Shell and the Steelers run out the clock. Final - Steelers 17 Redskins 7. New York at Minnesota - (Being in the same division, these two teams met in week two at New York. The Vikings won 11-10). The Giants score a touchdown on their 8 play opening drive as RB Earl Campbell rumbles 9 yards to pay-dirt. The Vikings answer almost immediately as QB Fran Tarkenton uncorks a bomb to RB Chuck Foreman covering 55 yards for the touchdown. The Giant's next drive covers 71 yard in 6 plays; all running plays. K Ali Haji-Sheik kicks a 22 yard FG as time runs out in the first half. The Giants lead 10-7 at halftime. The Viking's 8 play opening drive of the second half ends with two straight incomplete passes. They are forced to punt. On 3rd and 6, Giants QB Jeff Hostetler is sacked for a 15 yard loss forcing a punt. Vikings WR Sammy White returns the punt 56 yards setting up Chuck Foreman's 16 yard touchdown run. The Giant's final drive ends as Hostetler is sacked. Final - Vikings 14 Giants 10. NFC Los Angeles Rams at Denver Broncos - The Rams open the game with a 10 play drive including a 4th down conversion but the drive ends with two straight sacks of QB Doug Williams. The Rams are forced to punt. After two incomplete passes, Broncos QB Craig Morton completes to RB Otis Armstrong for 14 yards and to WR Steve Watson for 54 yards and a touchdown. Rams RB and league MVP Cullen Bryant returns the ensuing kickoff 56 yards. Williams completes to TE Charlie Young for 37 yards and a touchdown. Bryant converts the two point conversion as time runs out in the first half. Rams 8 Broncos 7 at halftime. The opening kickoff of the second half is returned 91 yards by Watson setting up the Bronco offense. The Ram defense holds, and the Broncos settle for a 19 yard chip-shot FG by K Jim Turner giving the Broncos the lead at 10-8. The Rams opening drive of the second half ends with a 4th and 5 incomplete pass. The Broncos go on a 7 play drive including a 4th down plunge by Morton culminating with a 31 yard TD run by Rob Lytle. Turner's extra point puts the game out of reach for the Rams. Final - Broncos 17 Rams 8. Dallas Cowboys at New Orleans Saints - Cowboy's RB Ron Springs takes the opening kickoff 72 yards. 3 plays later RB Tony Dorsett scampers 22 yards for the game's opening score. The Saints opening drive starts with back to back runs by Chuck Muncie and ends with a 36 yard touchdown pass, QB Bobby Scott to WR Ike Harris. Muncie runs for two yards completing the two point conversion. The Saints take an 8-7 lead. Springs returns the ensuing kickoff 44 yards giving the Cowboys good field position. After an incomplete pass, RB Tony Dorsett rumbles 49 yards for the go-ahead score. Dorsett then dives into the endzone completing the two point conversion giving the Cowboys a 15-8 lead. Saints QB Bobby Scott then leads a brilliant drive going 4 of 4 for 64 yards culminating with an 11 yard precision pass in coverage to Muncie for a touchdown. K Nick Meyer adds the extra point as time runs out tying the game (15-15) at halftime. The opening kickoff of the second half is returned 47 yards by Saints RB Tony Galbreath. Bobby Scott continues his brilliance with a 16 yard completion to Galbreath and a 15 yard touchdown pass to Muncie. The extra point gives the Saints a 22-15 lead. The Cowboy's make a valiant effort on their next drive including a 4th and 3 conversion but ultimately fall short a Carano pass deflects off of TE Jay Saldi and into the hands of Saints LB Reggie Mathis for the interception at the 2 yard line. The Saints run the ball (Muncie 2 for 49 yards and Galbreath 2 for 27 yards) down the field pounding through a tired Cowboy defense. Galbreath scores a touchdown on a 6 yard carry and Muncie adds the two point conversion giving the Saints a 30-15 lead. That would be the final score. I had two safeties this season. One was a sack, and the other was a runner tackled. Fun fact: My Season 14 Super Bowl was decided by a safety. The Steelers were trailing 7-6 mid third quarter when Rams QB Doug Williams base crossed the end line of the endzone as he was looking to pass. That put the Steelers up 8-7. No more points were scored, thus that was the final score. 6 turnovers and a safety. Strange game.
