Before the merger tournament

A couple tournaments ago I played the after the merger tournament...I figured might as well play a before the merger version....the AFL had came of age and the JETS and the CHIEFS proved the AFL had arrived and could compete now with the older NFL.....I will play the 16 NFL TEAMS in one bracket and the 10 AFL TEAMS in the other...a new champion will be crowned in 25 games.....to honor the chiefs and the Jets I have given them an easier shot to represent to the AFL as they get byes in the East and west and let the other 8 teams take a tougher route .....but one thing I have learned over the years...it's anyone's tournament to win.....I have also spiced up my game with the Tudor stadium that I finally put some of it together ...I think it adds a new and nicer look....this tournament I brought out the gold endzone game to start ....time to play.

Game 1

Cardinals 21 eagles 10

Big eagles vs big cards.....One thing that has always amazed me is that no matter which base...no matter which field Terry Metcalf of the Cardinals always has big games....this one was no different as he scored all 3 St Louis TDS and allows the Cardinals to advance to the 2nd round. Great Cardinals from the past include 21 Metcalf...44 Donnie Anderson...17 Jim Hart...81 Jackie Smith...72 Dan dierdorf....and 61 Bob Demarco....great eagles from yesterday include: 22 Timmy Brown...18 Ben Hawkins...29 Harold Jackson...51 Jim Ringo...16 norm Snead....and 60 Chuck bednarik.....up next I'll jump over to the AFL bracket and play the transition chargers in white vs the hog broncos in dark.

Game 2

Chargers 23 broncos 17

Typically in the late 60s these 2 teams would be finishing 3rd or 4th in the AFL west....but the chargers move on, on a Keith Lincoln sweep and advance to the 2nd round. The broncos had a chance to win late in regulation as they had 1st and goal on the 1 yard line...but 2 Floyd little runs went for minus 5 yds and a 3rd down pass was incomplete so they settled for a field goal to tie the score at 17 and force overtime....great chargers from yesteryear include : 22 lincoln...23 Paul Lowe...21 John hadle...77 Ernie Ladd...86 Earl faison...and 19 Lance alworth......great broncos include: 44 little....42 Billy vanhusen...11 Bobby Anderson....55 Pete duranko....and 87 rich "tombstone" Jackson.....I'll go back to the NFL side and play the bigmen Vikings vs the bigmen Rams.

Game 3

Vikings 21 Rams 17

The Rams were ahead 17 to 14 with 2 plays left but the Vikings had the ball on the 23....I said now what would bud grant do ?.....he'd run the ball in the middle and let Fred Cox kick a short field goal and tie the score....Oscar Reed of the Vikings broke it off tackle and went the distance and the Vikings move on to the 2nd round.....these 2 teams had some great playoff matchups in the late 60s and early 70s. Rams lose to the Vikings again. Arrrggghhhh….. I can’t take it. I was up at Lake Shasta camping with my parents that weekend (1969) when the Rams and Vikings played up in Minnesota. Watched the game on a portable TV set in that motor home. There was almost as much snow on the TV as there was outside. Cried my eyes out after that loss. Only took 52 years to finally be able to say LOS ANGELES Rams, Super Bowl Champs.

I understand completely....I was 10 years old and it was a crushing defeat . I picked the Rams as my favorite team the first time I saw big roman Gabriel and the fearsome foursome on a 4 o'clock game the year before. My Rams during the Knox years didn't fair any better in the 70s.

Bills 9 dolphins 7

The bills defense was the story in this one holding the dolphins to two first downs and intercepting 2 Bob Griese passes.....the bills ran out the clock in the 4th qt to move on to the 2nd round. Hoolllddd it! If you're playing the AFL Bills, that #34 had better be Cookie Gilchrist! And while OJ was in Buffalo for the pre-merger, he wore #36 his rookie year. 

Because I'm sure what you meant to say was, "Lookie Lookie, here comes Cookie!"

I alternate between cookie and Jim Braxton because Braxton represented my state WV in college....as far as oj...36 it correct but I keep him 32....but thanks Buford T 😆... 👍

BM Bears 21 ...BM 49ers 14

Well....it's been about 3 months ...I've been telling one my collector friends I was going to play...finally after about 3 months I did....hopefully I'll get back in the groove...every time I play these 2 teams I think of the 1965 game where Sayers scored 6 tds in the mud........Gayle Sayers led the bears with 2 tds....Ken Willard led the 49ers with 2 tds as well......great bears from the past include : 40 sayers....51 dick butkus....55 Doug buffone....81 Doug Atkins....45 dick Gordon....87 Ed obradovich  and 89 Mike ditka.....the 49ers were represented by 40 Willard....12 John Brodie....18 Gene Washington....22 Vic Washington....64 Dave Wilcox...69 Woody people's ...and ....57 Frank nunley.....up next will be the big spear Redskins vs the big Steelers.

Ok ...couldn't find them...I'll try to give u a basic set of rules I use.....I play 10 plays per qt....game takes me a little over an hour to play....I use the same 22 bases each tournament....after each game I base up the next 2 teams alternating the 22 onto the next 2 teams....punts...passes and extra points and fg I use a standard dice....for example for a pass to be complete the dice has to be ...4..5..6....if I roll a 1 it is an interception...( The interception is by closest def player to the rec) .if I punt or kick fg....a 2 is 20 yds...4 is 40 and so forth...on extra point a 1 means the pat is no good.....I play base on base alignment meaning def must line up head up on offensive player....offense can have 4 men in backfield and def can only have 4 as well..( prevents stacking ).....I do not turn players and a tackle occurs when the front of the def base touched the ball carrier ( if a def player has back to ball carrier I do not count the touch.....I typically run out of a 1 back set but will use a T in short yardage....on passes the QB is 25 yds from Line of scrimmage and must pass or run when he gets back to line.....onside kick can only be used in 4th ...I line up both teams on each 35 and place ball on 50...who ever touched gets possession gets the ball.....this has worked out well for me and I can finish a game quickly and I don't have to sit there all day.....if I can help with more info just let me know.

Larry brown had a big day for Washington scoring 2 tds and had several runs for over 30 yds....Bradshaw to Stalworth produced a few big plays for the Steelers but not enough. ....great Redskins from the past include : 43 brown....9 Sonny Jurgenson... 70 Sam huff...72 Joe rudkins...42 Charlie Taylor....and 87 Jerry smith....great Steelers from the past include : 12 bradshaw...82 Stalworth...75 Joe green....32 Franco Harris....68 lc greenwood and 84 Randy Grossman.....up next I'll go over to the AFL side and play the hogleg raiders vs the hogleg Bengals.

Once again Marv Hubbard had a big day for the raiders with 3 rushing tds.....stabler and branch hooked up for a long td pass play as well.....the Bengals were led by Essex Johnson and bob trumphey ....great raiders today include : 44 hubbard...21 branch....12 stabler....65 Dave dalby....63 Gene upshaw....78 art shell ... 41 Phil viliapiano...35 hewert dixon...and 83 Ted Hendricks....the Bengals were led by 19 Johnson...84 trumphey....12 Greg cook.....74 Mike Reed....79 Ross browner...88 Bruce coslett....58 Al beauchamp..and 18 Paul Robinson.....up next will be a hogleg matchup between the falcons and the saints.

Colts 16 browns 14

These 2 have met quite often over the years and this one goes to the colts 16 to 14....the game featured something a little unique as johnny Unitas of the colts scrambled for a 46 yd td in the first half....and bill Nelson of the browns ran for a 29 yd td in the 4th qt....great colts from yesterday include : 19 Unitas....36 norm bulachi....74 billy ray Smith....78 bubba Smith...89 gino marchetti ....50 bill curry and 88 John Mackey....the browns were led by 16 nelson ...44 Leroy Kelly...32 Jim brown....76 Lou groza....72 Jerry sherk....71 Walter Johnson and 89 milt morin.....next up I'll go back to the AFL bracket and play the oilers vs the Patriots.

Hog Patriots 13 Hog Oilers 3

Boston took the opening kickoff and put a good drive together on the backs of Jim Nance and Jim plunkett and scored the only TD of the game. Yes.....they made 42 bm teams .....I have all but 8 I think now but this was the only bm team I didn't have in either w or d....I really don't care if I get them all again.....I do have all the hogs in d and w now....I would like to upgrade my w hog chargers set...so really w hog chargers are the only team I'd like to get now since I got the big saints ...my w chargers are a transition set that is a mix of hog and chicken....I'd like to get full hog set.
