The Luck of the Draw Tournament

I just finished the last tournament on Sunday evening. I usually wait a few weeks before starting a new one. But I am in a playing mood so I figure I would take advantage of that. This tournament will be a new concept ...I'm calling it The Luck of the Draw Tournament. ....I collect the 26 teams  when the NFL and AFL merged in 1970.....I took a set of those 26 teams scoreboard name tags ...put them in a hat and drew out 16 teams....then I took the 16 put them back in the hat and matched up the first round games.....once I get the matchups I decide which uniforms I want each team to use.....after the first round I'll do the same thing with the 8 winners......game 1 featured the hog white broncos vs the hog dark black helmet saints ....and it was a humdinger ...I'm glad I decided to play tonight because it was a great game.

Washington 16 Oakland 10

This really was an exciting finish. The Redskins led 13-0 on the legs of Larry Brown ...then the raiders scored 10 straight to make it 13-10....the Redskins drove down inside the 20 trying to put it away but they had to settle for a fg and 6 point lead....then cliff branch ran the kickoff back to the 13.....then the raiders had 1st and goal on the 2 TD line ..but 3 marv Hubbard runs produced 0 yards ...and Washington intercepted stablers 4th down pass to move on to the 2nd round.....great Redskins from the past include : 44 brown....9 Sonny Jurgenson...42 Charlie Taylor...55 Chris hanburger and 87 Jerry Smith.....the raiders were led by 44 Hubbard...21 branch....12 stabler....25 Fred biletnikoff....60 Otis sistrunk....and 75 Howie long.......up next will be the cowboys vs the Steelers

Definetly not a very exciting game ...but it happens sometimes...no big plays...no touchdowns....I only took 2 game pictures because there just weren't any big plays....I kept waiting but it just wasn't happening tonight...... Call this one the cannonball butler game ....butler had 3 tds to lead the falcons and atlanta led 17-7 at the half....the colts were stopped on downs twice and unitas threw an interception before the half.....great falcons from yesterday include : 33 butler ...87 claude Humphrey....71.john zook....17 bob berry....86 jim mitchell....and 5 harmon wages.....the colts were led by 19 john unitas...24 lenny moore...35 alan ameche....81 ordell brase....70 art donavan...and 89 geno marchetti.....up next will be the big bills vs the big cardinals.

Probably the biggest thing about this game was its the first time i can remember in years that terry Metcalf did not score a TD....but McArthur Lane and dave williams both scored for the cardinals.......the score was tied at halftime 7-7 but williams pass from jim hart provided the only td of the second half....the cards were led by : 36 lane...80 williams...17 hart..67 dave stallings ..72 dan dierdorf ....61 bob demarco and 21 metcalf....the bills were led by : 12 joe Ferguson.....34 cookie Gilchrist....66 billy shaw....67 reggie McKenzie....64 harry jacobs and 58 mike stratton.....up next is the final first round game as the hog w dolphins face the blue hog vikings

Vikings 17 dolphins 10

Dave Osborn of the vikings broke an off tackle play for 70 yds to give the vikings a win and a trip to the 2nd round....the dolphins got down to the 23 yd line but 4 straight passes fell incomplete......great dolphins from the past include : 42 paul Warfield....39 larry czonka...81 howard twilley....22 mercury Morris....53 Bob matheson...and 66 larry little...famous vikings from yesteryear include....70 jim marshall...59 lonnie Warwick....11 joe kapp....44 chuck foreman...30 bill brown ....88 alan page....81 carl eller....and 84 gene washington.....i drew the names out for the second round and the matchups will be : rams vs chargers....vikings vs falcons.....steelers vs broncos....and redskins vs cardinals.....ill probably take a few days to decide which teams ill use ( hogs or bigmen ) but the chargers and rams will play the first game .

Next game is the original hog d chargers vs the custom w rams that my friend jim royall did for me...really nice team...it will be the first time i have used them...i think ill play this game sunday night.

Seems like every other tournament i say that was the best game i ever played...this one was a great great game....both teams scored so many tds i lost track...lol ...Roman gabriel threw 4 td passes...and scored the winning td on a scramble....paul lowe for the chargers had a great  game as well....the chargers led 21-20 at halftime and the rams outscored them 21 to 14 in the second half.....great rams from the past include: 18 Gabriel....84 jack snow...14 wendall tucker....32 cullen bryant.....75 deacon jones....74 merlin olsen....33 willie ellison...and 22 dick bass.....the chargers were led by: 23 lowe....19 lance alworth...21 john hadle..27 gary garrison..78 walt sweeney....77 ernie ladd...86 earl faison....45 speedy duncan...and 74 ron mix....up next will be the red hkbs falcons and the w hog vikings

Another defensive struggle...the broncos were trailing 6-0 when floyd little finally broke one late in game to give the broncos a 7-6 lead....but terry Bradshaw connected to randy grossman and franco harris to put the steelers in the winning fg position...the steelers had 3 field goals in the game....great steelers represented were 12 bradshaw...32 harris....84 grossman....68 lc greenwood...75 joe green....58 jack lambert...88 lynn swann...and 82 john Stalworth.....great broncos from the past included...44 little...87 rich jackson....11 bobby anderson...42 billy van husen....70 paul williams and 88 al Denison.....up next will be the hog cardinals vs the hog redskins.

The final 4 is set ( the rams will face the cardinals and the falcons will face the steelers ) 

This game was a battle back and forth but a missed extra point by the redskins and a then a field goal secured the cardinals the win and the final score....the cards were led by : 21 terry metcalfe....85 mel gray....81 jackie smith....17 jim hart....72 dan dierdorf ....and 54 tom banks.....the redskins were led by : 43 larry brown...9 sonny jurgenson...42 charlie taylor....80 roy jefferson....55 chris hanburger...and 87 jerry smith......ill decide in the next 2 days which combination of teams ( bm or hogs ) and which game ill play 1st for the final 4.

Another "wow" game.....i know these are little plastic teams but sometimes its like they take on another dimension....that is why i love the great game of electric football....these 2 teams tonight played like they knew a trip to the championship was at stake..one big play after another was answered by the other team all night....harmon wages of the falcons had a monster game with 4 tds.....franco harris of the steelers had 4 tds as well....its like the steelers didnt really lose...they just needed one more play....the falcons move on to take on the rams in the championship game ...im going to let both teams be from the bigmen era for this one.....great falcons represented include : 5 wages...33 cannonball butler...86 jim mitchell...87 claude Humphrey...71 john zook.....and 60 tommy nobis.....great steelers include : 32 harris...12 terry bradshaw....20 Rocky blier....75 joe Greene...63 ernie holmes .....34 andy Russell....and 58 jack lambert.....i will try to play the championship game sunday night.

Championship game 

Rams 24 falcons 23

Rainy day today so i did what i used to do as a kid....played the championship game of the current tournament......what a great game it was....the score was tied 10 all at the half....the teams each scored 2 tds in the 2nd half ...but the falcons missed an extra point .....at the end of the game the falcons had 1st and goal on the 5 but it took them 3 plays to score....they kicked onside and recovered but only had 1 play left.....( A field goal was only a 1 out of 6 chance ) ....so the last play pass was incomplete and the rams are the new champs....great falcons include : 60 tommy nobis....17 bob berry....5 harmon wages...86 jim mitchell....87 claude Humphrey....and 71 john zook.....the rams were led by 18 roman Gabriel....75 deacon jones...74 merliin olsen....33 willie ellison...22 dick bass and 34 les josephson.
