Tweaking is a lot of fun and the time that you put into it can be very rewarding.

How do you recommend people new to the hobby learn how to do that? Watching youtube videos?

I don't like tweaking. Didn't like it when I was twelve and I still don't.  🥴 Go ahead, call me grumpy. I'll own it.

What if you decided to buy a new car and the salesperson said, "It probably won't steer straight. Give this new car a tweak before you freak."

Or a new big screen television. "Yeah, partner, you'll need to tweak the antenna before you will get a picture."

Or a new bed, "Once in a while these mattress work well out of the box but most of the time you've gotta tweak before you sleep."

What if you bought a new 2024 Chilton Repair Manual for your 2024 bases, and a disclaimer warned, "None of these tweaks have been documented to be helpful. But they might be. Your results may vary."

The best advice I've seen came from zak99b5. He wrote, "I like to "audition" tons of new bases to find the few that run quickly and how I like right out of the box for the most part.  That way, the "memory" of the plastic is good performance."  😃👍

Spot on.

I learned a lot from his videos!

Most importantly the lesson of being methodical while tweaking.

Electric Coach is his own man, lol. What I mean by that, is he's not afraid to do things the way he thinks is right. Out of curiosity, do you get into the heating up the pliers aspect with a coffee mug warmer? Some people seem to agree it makes the difference in regards to bases remaining tweaked and not....

I tried that with the Sheriffs deputy, but for some reason he wasn't buying it.....guess he's not an electric football fan. 😣

Seriously, I'd Love to see a side by side comparison of the two ideologies here. On the one side, tweaked bases (by someone who knows what they're doing). On the other, bases straight outta' the box with say, enough added weight from tungsten putty or nuts/bolts to make the figures weigh at least 5 grams....

Perhaps there's even a compromise. Could it be that some bases run well out of the box (with or without added weight), and the ones that don't can be tweaked to work efficiently? Quick! To the Science lab everyone....🧑‍🔬🥼👨‍🔬

In our league, we do not add weight to our players.  Just the base and a standard-size fab-5 figure.

I do have some bases on my teams that I've messed with (my results have been far too uneven to call it tweaking), but most are "natural performers."

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that a great tweaked base would out-perform a great out-of-the-box one.

I agree wholeheartedly.  For me, the most enjoyment is playing the games.  I use a multi-stop system and allow all players to be pivoted to an extent at each stop, so tweaking is not necessary for me.  I've been using my multi-stop system since 1965, long before I ever heard of tweaking and it has worked for me.  I'm too old and too set in my ways to change now.  😀

I Love the idea of adding weight for several reasons. One, you can get a more realistic comparison between positional players. Lineman should be overpowering backs so the weight helps with that....

Secondly, coach Terry has illustrated in other threads how when at least 5 grams (or more) is applied to a given base, it helps with the tweaking aspect because it makes the bases automatically run that much smoother/straighter since they benefit from the weight.

Yeah, that seems right. I guess it's like the old saying goes: "You get out of it what you put into it."

I do get all the pros of weighting bases, as well as creative weight limits (such as total team weight).  It's just when I started the league, only one other guy had ever played EF before, and that was as a kid with his older brother's set.  The rest were just too young.  So I wanted to make it all very simple, to keep it fun--the game is complex enough.  This is also the reason we only use 11-player ironman teams.

I do use a coffee cup warmer.   Heating seems to “set” the prongs and make the tweak last longer.

It is very helpful is straightening those seemingly hopeless bases that arrive with prongs going in every other direction.

OK, Got'cha. Maybe I should be in your league then since I haven't really much at all either, LOL.

Well, it's good enough for Coach Shawn AND Electric coach, then it's good enough for me. 💯
