VIKINGS WIN FIRST OF SEASON EDGING LIONS 17-14!

LIONS2(2)ART.thumb.jpg.6efffb14f979971409328a36ff51e525.jpg

SauravNAV_Weekly_Digest.jpg.a0a65c49071985b0faf005d8bbae20b3.jpgWritten By Levi Vick. (Long Island Electric Football League Week #3 Completed). Week #3 ended with a number of undefeated teams. Miami in the AFC East, Washington in the NFC East, Denver in the NFC West, Indianapolis in the NFC South, and Green Bay in the NFC North, are all unbeaten at (3-0). Starting out (0-2) the Minnesota Vikings did not expect to be winless at this point in week three of the LIEFL season.

The Vikings offense has to get busy, and that means now, or their season will be lost. Vikings coach Joey Pizz said, “I am concerned about his team considering we were one of the top defenses last season and we are still one of the top defenses, but Adrian Peterson has been limited to just 250 all-purpose yards and my guy hasn't scored a touchdown. I hope this game will motivate the team to light the fire. Historically, we are always slow starters, but we can't afford to be in a seven-game season. You have to win at least four, even five to get into the playoffs in this league which means winning on the road."

Facing the Lions and the leading all-purpose player in the NFC LIEFL All-Pro Dexter Bussey, Minnesota will be tested heavily and early. Bussey’s kick return play is exceptional. He has eight touches for 615 yards with four 100-yd touchdown returns to lead the NFC. With his blazing speed and the way Bussey is playing, coach Johnny-Freeport is hopeful that this team will make the playoffs again. Detroit is (12-10) in the past three seasons making the playoffs just once.

If you've been reading about our league, in 2020 the Lions lost in a very controversial NFC Divisional Championship Game to the Green Bay Packers, which we called the Snow Bowl I, 31-26 to the Packers. It's the first time we ever played a snow game in this league. Johnny-Freeport lost his protest even though everyone in the league agreed and voted that the game could be played with our first ever snow game. It was an awesome game that he has not forgotten!

Detroit will have to play big against the slow starting Vikings and Adrian Peterson today. Considering the Lions defeated Kansas City at home in Week #2, 23-17, in overtime the Lions will be fighting to win one on the road in a vicious Purple-People Eater environment! Watch out for Vikings John Randle, and Carl Eller on defense for Minnesota, but are they up for the task of stopping Bussey?

The Lions have been consistent and have battled hard this season with two overtime games. Detroit lost to the undefeated Tampa Bay Bucs 31-28, but their front line has improved immensely. The Lions picked up several new player bases in the draft which have elevated their gameplay.

 THE GAME:

LIONS4ART.thumb.jpg.04de54a6631ea375fe7e811a924a6dc5.jpgWith a little more than a minute left to go in the game with the score tied 14-14, the Minnesota Vikings won their first game of the season beating a fierce Detroit Lions team 17-14. LIEFL All-Pro Dexter Bussey played hard! Bussey in the loss, exploded for a 70-yard touchdown run from scrimmage, the longest of the season. But it was the two defenses that kept the game from a high-scoring outcome. The Lions defense has improved. They shut down Vikings star player Adrian Peterson and held him to just 20 yards on just five carries.

These two defenses are the kind of defenses between the Vikings and Lions that could prove to be the deciding factor at the end of the season come playoff time in late November. Dexter Bussey finished the game with eight rushes for 130 yards, with two touchdowns! Coach Johnny-Freeport had a hard time with the loss, and he would lose his next game today as well, walking away a two-time loser. Justin Jefferson finally broke out for Minnesota. Jefferson had a key 48-yard touchdown reception to give Minnesota the lead in the second half. Adrian Peterson finished with 180 all-purpose yards, including an 84-yard kick return which sealed the deal in a challenging matchup between two fierce teams.LIONS2(2)ART.thumb.jpg.6efffb14f979971409328a36ff51e525.jpg

The battle between Detroit’s Lomas Brown and Minnesota’s Carl Eller at tackle was exciting to watch. Brown had two tackles and Eller had one, and they both Rose to the occasion in an exciting fast-paced game, enough to silence Johnny Freeport. What a game!

The Vikings and Lions both have tough schedules ahead. Minnesota plays has a huge Week #4 game at Atlanta next week. Good luck trying to stop LIEFL Hall of Fame running back Gerald Riggs, but if any team can hold back Riggs, it might be the Vikings.

The Lions have a favorable schedule. They face the undefeated Green Bay Packers (3-0) next week iat Detroit, and then the Lions stay home to play New Orleans and the Vikings again.

RAMS PULL OFF GRITTY 10-7 WIN OVER RAVENS!

Billy O’C’s two-time LIEFL Super Bowl Champion Los Angeles Rams are coming off a tough loss to the Giants in Week #2, 21-17. And like everybody else in the league, their schedule will not get any easier. Los Angeles still packs a nice one-two punch between Wendell Tyler and Isaac Bruce. Bruce had 166 yards last week in New York and Tyler rushed for 61 yards with a touchdown. The Rams must expand THEIR OFFENSE this week against the tough Ravens defense and alternate coach Joe Bino will be at the helm. Tony Siragusa “The Goose”, has four tackles and he’s been dominant in the trenches, but he faces the FAB-5 line of Los Angeles led by Merlin Olsen and Rosey Greer at tackle. Billy O’C is finished for the season. Bino said, “I love the Rams and this week is special because I get to play against the loudest coach in the league and I am going to embarrass him.”

Coach Johnny-Freeport's Ravens played well in Weeks 1 and 2. Five-time LIEFL All-Pro D e r r i c k Mason, had two excellent performances in Week 1 and 2. Mason had a big game against Tennessee with 235 all-purpose yards and two 100-yard touchdowns! The Ravens beat Pittsburgh and Week #1, 21-14, for their 40th all-time win, and they lost a close one to Tennessee 17-14, last week. Now's the Time for the Ravens to make their move in their division with Pittsburgh on the rise and last year’s AFC North Division Champ Cleveland, beating the door down.RAMS1(2)ART.thumb.jpg.34779e13ee6026cbab4484886412a15e.jpg

Johnny-Freeport said, “Bino is half a coach. He is a few steps beneath the competition in the league, and he doesn’t play enough to hold up a team like the Rams. I am winning this North Division this year and the Ravens are back. I am a loud and proud player who doesn't care what you or anyone else in the league thinks!”

The Los Angeles Rams pulled off a gritty 10-7 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, but it wasn't easy. This game was a defensive battle between two ironclad front lines which held running back Wendell Tyler of Los Angeles to just 21 yards on 10 carries, but it would be Tyler who was the deciding factor in the game.

RAMS2ART.thumb.jpg.f14c36b1eb1bdcff2abf558631f008d7.jpgIt didn't work out well for the Ravens either Jamaal Lewis only had 14 yards on the ground, and the most yards on the day was by Isaac Bruce who had 92 kick return yards. The touchdown of the day for the Rams came on a 33-yard pass connection to Wendell Tyler around the right side of the field. And for the Ravens it was Mark Ingram who took his first touchdown of the year into the endzone on a 54-yard speedy play to tie the game in the second half, but with seconds to go the Rams played it smart and Coach Joe Bino kicked a field goal to silence Johnny Freeport 10-7! What a game!

The Rams (2-1) are one up on the rest of the division in the NFC West and they play Arizona (0-3) at home next week and then San Francisco at San Fran in a showdown. Their woes won't end there. The Rams will be at Seattle (1-2), then finish the season at home against Cincinnati (0-3) so Los Angeles will have to build and play big to contend. It won't be any easier for the AFC North Baltimore Ravens (1-2), although every team in their division is (1-2).  San Francisco (1-2) plays at Baltimore in Week #4, then the Ravens face division rival Cleveland next week in what may be the deciding factor in their contention for the 2023 playoffs.

PANTHERS BEAT JAGUARS IN HEAVY DEFENSIVE BATTLE 10-7!

jags2(1)art.thumb.jpg.a22905396ad4bef6325ee8f24ec9d940.jpg

This game between the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1) and Carolina Panthers (1-1), although from different conferences, is a great matchup between two tough defensive teams who are on a collision course. Both teams, especially the Jaguars, have upped their defense. Carolina is a proven winner who SEEM so close to making the big show in the LIEFL. They never quit!

The Panthers feature DeShaun Foster who's always at the top of the food chain when it comes to running the football for Carolina, and they have a spectacular return Man and Greg Jones who's more of a specialist, but who can unleash an explosive offense combination between Jones and Foster. The Jaguars have Freddie Taylor who's been consistent for the last six seasons. Taylor always finishes in the top 10. The Jaguars have two special tackles and Rob Meier and Charles Spencer.

jags1(2)art.thumb.jpg.62d8c40918e60e6f35e9c861d9597aa2.jpg

After a 45-yard kick return by Greg Jones the Panthers went to work and they would break through the right side of the Jacksonville defensive line until they met Jaguars tackle Charles Spencer and Tony Bocelli who made three out of their first four tackles for the Jaguars. Finally Foster broke free for a 30-yard first down, bringing the ball to the Jaguars 13-yard line. It was one play later that Foster, instead of going to the right side slipped through the left side of the Jaguars line and into the end zone to make the score 7-0, with 3:37 remaining in the half! It’s clear this will be a battle.

Jacksonville received the ensuing kickoff and went 43-yards on a Freddy Taylor return. Taylor almost burst free. It took nine plays for the Jaguars to score on a 1-yard touchdown run by Fred Taylor to tie the game 7-7!

To watch the Jaguars compete Head to Head with a team like the Panthers showed their resilience. The game was decided by time and margin of error against a proven elite competitor in Carolina who has made it to the playoffs three straight seasons. This close game shows just how far the Jaguars have advanced through the draft.

Greg Jones made the key run with the game tied and with time running out, Jones returned the football 56 yards and enough for Coach Matt Zoo York to kick the game winning 44-yard field goal to give the Panthers the win 10-7!

DIRTY BIRDS UPSET BUCS 17-14 AS RIGGS TOPPS 1,000 YARDS AGAIN!

The Atlanta Falcons are missing one piece to their puzzledBUCS2ART.thumb.jpg.0a321a88f69fa6437199e2c49e8bbeb4.jpg LIEFL career. Coach Johnny-Freeport has turned the team in the right direction. How can they lose with LIEFL feature back and Hall of Fame running back Gerald Riggs? Riggs is the only plastic hero to reach the 2,000-yard mark in the LIEFL. His 2,339 yards in 2019 season, was one we can’t forget. Riggs had 21 touchdowns, a seven-game season record. The one missing piece to the puzzle is an NFC Championship and Super Bowl appearance.

Coach Johnny Freeport said, “I couldn’t care less about statistics at all as I said last week. What I want for this team is to cross the obstacle of advancing this team to a Super Bowl, but the competition in Green Bay, Los Angeles, Washington and other elite teams make for some fierce competition. I ain’t scared of any of these coaches or teams, and the team usually takes on the personality of the coach. I think I am the best all-around coach in this league. My players prove it.”

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are on a roll this season. LIEFL All-Pro Jimmie Giles has been a beast.  He’s the most reliable player on the team with a chance to finish even better than last year. Giles finished 9th in NFC all-purpose yards in 2022, with 19 touches for 1,138 yards with four 100-yard touchdowns and this season he already has 548 all-purpose yards on 9 touches, with three touchdowns, two are 100-yard returns.BUCCS5ART.thumb.jpg.908998269a7e01a0f8ae9f93f51c322c.jpg

This was an epic division battle which in the end would prove to be an eye opening defensive struggle between the elite Atlanta Falcons and the rising Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Last season we saw the Falcons lose 37-31 to San Francisco in the NFC Wild Card Game in overtime. Three times before that the Falcons qualified for the playoffs and lost each time, never making it past the Wild Card Game. But in this game Gerald Riggs would run for 95 yards rushing with a touchdown. Riggs also had 148 kick-return yards, giving him 547 for the season, but he leads the LIEFL in rushing on 22 carries for 474 yards with seven touchdowns rushing. Riggs is the first player of the 2023 season to break 1,021 yards, and he's on track to come close to tying the all-time 7 Game season all purpose yards record of 2339 yards. Last year Riggs touched the ball 61 times for 1572 yards with 11 touchdowns!

Riggs finished today's game with nine touches for 243 all-purpose yards with one touchdown in the Falcons 17-14 upset of Tampa Bay. Bucs star Jimmie Giles had three touches for 117 all-purpose yards, and the surprise of the day was Ricky Bell. Bell had 10 carries for 70 yards with one touchdown. Tampa Bay is at Tennessee next week and Atlanta hosts Minnesota!

SAINTS AND BIGGS LOSE IN UPSET TO TEXANS 14-13!

The Houston Texans played in a wild upset over rookie coach Bobby Biggs winless home team New Orleans Saints. With five top draft picks the Saints and Biggs just couldn't get the job done as Houston running back LIEFL All-Pro Ron Dayne piled up 197 all-purpose yards on eight touches, but it was Texans tight end Ryan Griffin again, who came up big for the Houston. Griffin played great against Indianapolis in Week #1 with a 53-yard touchdown pass in the Texans loss to Indianapolis, but since that game Houston has showed lots of resilience and grit. But this week with just seconds left to go in the game Griffin ran a crossing pattern on a 57-yard massive touchdown score for the Texans in their come from behind upset to beat the Saints, 14-13. Reggie Bush had 10 touches for 177 yards in the game with a touchdown, but the New Orleans defense couldn't hold on.

saints1(1)art.thumb.jpg.c6f54abb6f999b0dbcdf7a3516b02822.jpgThe Texans have really showed up the last two weeks losing to Miami 3-0, in a defensive battle. This game the Saints had a hard time moving the football against the Texans, but for a few moments they showed some signs of greatness when Reggie Bush exploded for a 57-yard touchdown run. But Houston's Ron Dayne answered right back with a 43-yard touchdown run and the Saints just ran out of time. The biggest criticism of the day was Bobby Biggs time management. It cost Biggs the game! Biggs learned the speed of the game and the league, coming from a pivot league and a countdown league and all those other things worked against Bobby Biggs heavily as you can see him struggle to set up the right play in a short amount of time. Biggs left frustrated but determined to stay competitive. It won't get any easier for his New Orleans Saints. The Saints (0-3) host the tough New York Giants and Ahmad Bradshaw next week!
