HARPER IS BACK AS JETS UPSET 49ERS IN STUNNER!

(Meadowlands, NJ August 10, 2020). The New York Jets and Coach Joey Pizz are on a hot streak. They came out to play tonight and the game plan worked! The 49ers were no joke in 2019 going (6-2) and losing in the NFC Divisional Game 38-34 to division rival Los Angeles Rams. On "Slawson's Corner" it was predicted that the Jets would have their hands full trying to shut down last year's #1 rusher and LIEFL record-breaker Ricky Watters and a very competitive 49er football team. San Francisco is coming off a big loss and letdown at home in Week#1 against the Arizona Cardinals, which could affect the entire season for San Francisco as they get off to a rough start. "You can't afford to fall behind in this league. We have to try to figure things out here with the Jets tonight, and we have the Giants next week" said 49ers Coach Ed Viglietta.

The Jets may be as good as they were in 2008, when they won the 32-team throwback tournament and then in an upset, they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card Game 34-31 in (OT), before losing to the AFC Champion that year, New England 35-31 in the AFC Divisional Championship Game! It would be their only playoff appearance in LIEFL history and since 2008, the New York Jets and Coach Pizz are (6-15). With the Draft, the league has changed dramatically with the league becoming extremely competitive and unpredictable with the eight "Alpha-personalities" as coaches who have the desire for success.

Jets back Bruce Harper was riddled with injuries in 2019, but they picked up Le'Veon Bell last season who was a big contributor with 543 yards totaled with five touchdowns. Coach Pizz' goal is to create a dynamic-duo between Harper and Bell to make the Jets more competitive in the already competitive AFC East. On offense the experience and leadership of Bruce Harper has made a difference with big contributions the last two games. If Harper can stay healthy the Jets may again reach the playoffs. On defense, the Jets came up big in the Draft with much needed improvements. Coach Pizz won, gaining defensive back Jamal Adams and a front line anchored by Joe Klecko.

On New York's opening drive, Bruce Harper's first run from scrimmage, he ran a 19-yard first down for the Jets and then he sped through the 49er defense for a six yard touchdown after a 75-yard kick return by return-man Wesley Walker on the Jets opening drive to take the lead, 7-0 for New York! Pizz has his Jets looking terrific, even after the 14-7 loss to the Buffalo Bills last week, holding OJ Simpson to 78 yard rushing the Jets have rebounded with an attitude. Harper's touchdown put the score at 7-0, with 10:54 left to go in the half!

San Francisco return specialist Jerry Rice returned the ball on the kickoff 46 yards for Ricky Watters and the San Francisco offensive line to take over. Watters was held to 77 rushing yards last week against Arizona, so Coach Viglietta said that he has to get Watters more involved in the game. It took six plays for Watters to score on a 22-yard run to tie the game 7-7, with 44 seconds left in the half!

The second half of football went fast with a back-and-forth defensive battle between the Jets front three of Gastineau, Hill, and Klecko and 49er's Haley, Dean, and Cross, fighting hard in the trenches making Watters and the 49ers work overtime for a few yards.  It is a change in the Jets. On a 29-yard return by Walker, New York managed to battle down field with Harper catching a wobbly 40-yard pass from Jets quarterback Sam Darnell, and then Harper had a 22-yard run, and finally, Harper caught another pass for 18 yard pass, this time for a touchdown, putting the Jets ahead 14-10 with time running out on Viglietta's San Francisco 49ers.

On San Francisco's final drive, Jerry Rice managed a 50-yard return and the 49ers kicked a 50-yard field-goal, as the New York Jets win their home opener 14-10 in a stunner!

Bruce Harper had 9 carries for 107 total yards with two touchdowns, and Wesley Walker had two returns for 104 yards! Jerry Rice had two returns for 96 yards, and the story of the day is the Jets defense who held 49er running back Ricky Watters to just 64 yards rushing for the (1-1) Jets who play the Colts on the road and then they come home to face Denver and Miami in two huge games which will be the breaking point of the Jets season. 49er Coach Ed Viglietta had no comment after the game, but Jets Coach Joey Pizz said, "This win felt great and to beat a great coach like Vigs and the 49ers, we feel ready for the Colts next week."
