CARDINALS BURN RIVAL 49ERS IN WEEK #1 OT UPSET! 2030072493_494.thumb.jpg.f15edfcc9fafcda1c5e2801b68ce8921.jpg

Long Island Electric Football League AUGUST 4, 2020. San Francisco, California. In the Long Island Electric Football League 2019 season, the LIEFL #22-Ranked Arizona Cardinals (64-89 All-Time), did not play division rival, LIEFL #17-Ranked San Francisco 49ers (66-76 All-Time), but they will move up in the pre-season rankings for 2020, to #6 after today's game!

The 49ers were ranked 6th in the LIEFL pre-season poll. In-your face Coach Kevin Maloney at 6 ft 4' has pulled off many upsets in his four years in the league, this time with his Arizona Cardinals against Ed Viglietta's 49ers, in a heart breaker for Coach Vigs. The Cardinals fell apart in game #6 last year losing to division rivals, Seattle Seahawks 17-14. Up to that point, Arizona was undefeated at 5-0! Then in Game#7, they lost in a fierce battle to the Los Angeles Rams 17-14, and then Arizona was eliminated from advancing in the playoffs, finally losing in the LIEFL NFC Divisional Game to the Carolina Panthers who gave the Cards a taste of fullback Greg Jones, losing 49-35!

If you have been following along with our league, you know that San Francisco running back Rickey Watters shattered the single 7-game season rushing record with 925 yards behind that stellar 49ers front line of Charles Haley, Randy Cross, and Fred Dean. This team opens holes and Watters finds them with speed and accuracy, like an NFL back.  But the Cardinal defense is big!  Tudor put some beef into a few 67 BIG MEN teams, and the Cardinals are one of them.  We didn't like the Arizona uniforms so we decided to create our own, worthy of a look.

San Francisco has created some history, winning the NFC West four times in their LIEFL career, but the team to beat in the West is the Los Angeles Rams, and now Arizona Cardinals. In 2019 they won six games in this league and ended up losing in the first round of the NFC divisional game to those 2019 Rams 38-34, after winning the NFC West title. The difference in those wins for the Rams has been Ricky Watters and Jerry Rice who combined for a total 2605 all-purpose yards with 22 total touchdowns between the two players last season. Coach Viglietta said, "When that 747 lands on your back and you're out of energy it can be tough to carry on through. That's the point that we are at with these electric football San Francisco 49ers franchise. We have a very competitive schedule for 2020. We play the New York Jets and New York Giants both on the road, then we have Philadelphia and the defending 2018 LIEFL Super Bowl XVI, and XV Champion, division rival Los Angeles Rams at home, and the last two games are against Dallas and Seattle." It will be a real challenge to make the playoffs.

The 49ers were involved in some tremendous games last season, opening the season up with a historic battle, one which went into the LIEFL history books when they lost 35-31, to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 14th. Then on September 27th, they had another historic game beating the high-octane Atlanta Falcons 31-28, in overtime! There was a total of 880 yards in that game with 8 touchdowns. Ricky Watters had 170 yards rushing, and Jerry Rice returned the ball five times for 273 yards. Superstar Gerald Riggs in that game had 224 yards and another 126 yards rushing.

These are historic games in the Long Island Electric football League, unforgettable as the league's competitiveness continues to rise and the coaches 100% committed to bringing home a trophy.

Tonight, two beautifully tailored teams in new uniforms took the field ready to rumble. It made the game feel like the intensity of the two coaches and the teams was a perfect match! Jerry Rice opened up the game with a 53-yard return only to be met by Cardinal linebacker Gene Stallings on a hard-hit! The 49ers took over with Ricky Watters at the helm. On first down Watters got bounced back 13 yards by All-Pro lineman, Dan Dierdorf who's part of that talented and speedy Cardinal line. These birds are a very difficult defense to manage, and Coach Maloney will bring it all! He did not stop running his psych the entire game. On second down, Watters slid through the line, exploding for 26 yards to the Arizona 21-yard line for the first down. In the trenches San Francisco lineman Fred Dean, stepped up for the 49ers opening a huge hole and regaining that 13 yard loss from the previous play, plus 26 more yards for the first down! And after two failed runs, Watters got open in the flats and caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Montana for a 7-0, 49ers lead with 6:09 remaining in the half!

Arizona's All-Pro return specialist, Mel Gray took the ball back 53-yards on his return until he's met up with Freddie Dean on a crushing hit.
And on the very next play Cardinals fullback OJ Anderson runs and stuns the crowd with a pretty 47-yards run around 49er lineman Fred Dean, into the end zone untouched, tying the game 7-7 for the Cardinals!

The Cardinals were the only team in the Long Island Electric football league who were undefeated until the 6th week of action last season.  Viglietta was on high-alert, knowing his 49ers come into such an important game so early on in the season.  That Arizona front offensive line looks phenomenal opening a huge hole through tough defensive tackle Chris Doleman, for the 49ers. Anderson just swept around the left side with no one to tackle him.

On the kickoff Jerry Rice returned the ball 51-yards setting up Ricky Watters. Watters took over again with a brilliant 41-yard run to the Arizona 8-yard line with 1:03 left to go in the half with the 49ers driving the ball. Two plays later, Watters ran the ball in earning another first down for 3 yards and scoring on a sweet 6-yard touchdown making the score 14-7 with 13:16 left to go in the game.

It was Arizona Mel Gray's turn again. Gray ran back a beautiful 61-yard kick-return setting up the Cardinals at the 39-yard line. On second down OJ Anderson picked up five yards in a huge collision with Ricky Watters at the 33-yard line of the 49ers. On third down Anderson scampered 11 yards for another Arizona first down at the 49er 22-yard line. The San Francisco linebacker corps went to work with Ronnie Lott, Ken Norton and Fred Dean making a huge stop on Anderson on 1st down for a loss of a yard. Anderson on third down runs for another 6 yards for a first down at the 49er 10-yard line.

The Cardinals weren't finished yet. Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray threw a beautiful pass for a 5-yard touchdown to Anderson who scores his second touchdown of the game, coming up big for the Cardinals, tying the game at 14 and sending it into overtime in another Week#1 dramatic overtime game! Maloney's Arizona Cardinals wins the toss in OT!

In overtime Cardinals Mel Gray got tripped up with a 28-yard kick return and on first down Anderson got stuffed for a six yard loss by the 49er defense. There is no quit in these two teams or coaches.

On a 45-yard pass play from Murray, Anderson landed at the 33-yard line of San Francisco as the Cardinals go in for the kill. Every point counts as you know, at the end of the season if it comes down to points in a division teams fight for the most points in the event of a tiebreaker. That's why I sometimes teams run up the scores with no mercy because you can actually help them get into the playoffs

When the Cardinals went back to the running game on first down after the 45 yard pass reception to Anderson, Big Fred Dean came up with his third tackle on Anderson, but what a game for Anderson. He had 10 carries for 83 yards rushing, and he caught two passes for 50 yards with two touchdowns for Arizona totaling 12-133-2 touchdowns and all-purpose yards. San Francisco's Ricky Watters finished with 7 carries and 77 yards rushing, and he caught a 21-yard touchdown pass totaling 8-98-2 touchdowns and all-purpose yards.

The Cardinals kicked the field-goal from 25 yards out to win the game 17-14 in 6:47 of overtime!  Arizona wins big!  They play the (1-0) Washington Football Team next week, and San Francisco goes to New York to play back-to-back New York teams, the Jets (0-1) and Giants who play Pittsburgh this week.

As the two coaches shook hands this week and parted ways, Viglietta said, "The Cardinals have to be respected, but we know they are beatable and so is Maloney, it is just a matter of time . We shouldn't have lost this game and in this league every game is a playoff game because there only seven games, so losing at home is the worse thing that could happen, especially to the division rival. Maloney had some words for the 49ers. "The 49ers were 6-1 in my division last season. I watched them on more than one occasion and studied Watters and his running style. We know that Jerry Rice can't be stopped on kick returns, but we need to slow him down.  I knew they'd be hard to stop, but I knew if we won an OT coin toss we had a fighting chance.  Coach Vigs is a great coach, but I think I am a little better! At least today we were. Upsets are in the making from my teams, they are ready, I spent some time honing in on the hobby and making my teams tough and ready for these guys,"said Maloney. Maloney also said that one of his teams will win the Super Bowl, and this Arizona Cardinal team is gunning for the Rams! We had to be sure Maloney was bringing regulation size guys. Between him and Coach "Paddy" Branigan, the league is on full alert for these two renegade coaches. Sounds like Maloney's plan worked!

Their teams suite them well. Branigan has the Pittsburgh Steelers coming up against Coach Pizz' Giants.
